Good morning!

I am sorry I am not with you today. Please make the most of your time in the cafeteria - remember that this is YOUR time to earn credit for social studies don’t let anyone (including yourself!) take it from you!!

I would like you to use today to clean up those task dashboards - I see a LOT of red!

Here are your priorities, in order of importance:

  1. If you didn’t finish briefing your Required SCOTUS Case do so first.
  2. The Power to Make War
  3. January 6 SS.1.1-1.5 Activity
  4. US v. Lopez

If you have completed ALL of these tasks, you may use this time for other classwork.

See you Tuesday! E-mail me (salters@allentownsd.org) if you have any questions.

I would like you to use today to clean up those task dashboards - I see a LOT of red!

Here are your priorities, in order of importance:

  1. Complete the Launch Milestone
  2. If you participated in a collaborative discussion, complete the post-discussion reflection (Milestone 1, Stepping Stone 4).
  3. Milestone 2 Stepping Stone 1 - you MUST complete these reading notes - you WILL need them for your argument paper.

If you have completed ALL of these tasks, you may use this time for other classwork. I am sorry you cannot work on Milestone 2 Stepping Stone 2 (the SS.1.4 assessment) because the papers are in my classroom.

Good Morning and Happy Friday!

I’m sorry I haven’t been with you - I have been home dealing with a family emergency.

By now you should have read all the slides in the Power to Make War task. Today I have added a set discussion questions to the task. Please use the slides to answer the three questions. You may discuss your answers with each other, but everyone must submit their own unique answers. Make sure to share you doc with staff@b21.allentownsd.org.

See you on Monday!

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I am so sorry I haven’t been with you these past few days - I am home dealing with a family emergency.

I have left instructions for the past 2 days that no one has followed :-( I’m sorry I didn’t post then here before today - Slate was down when I put my plans in on Wednesday morning.

I need you to work together today to make a list of what we need for Senior Week. It should really be 2 lists - what we need to do, and what supplies we need.

Please work together on this and have one person email it to me (salters@allentownsd.org).

Kaelen and Damely, please get everyone organized for this today.

See you Monday!

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I am so sorry I haven’t been with you these past few days - I am home dealing with a family emergency. We will complete the 2 remaining collaborative discussions starting Monday - which is a lucky break for those of you who haven’t turned your discussion prep in to Milestone 1 Stepping Stone 2 yet!!

Today you have a new task - Milestone 2 Stepping Stone 1. This is an article on the top 4 reasons why people say they don’t vote. There are reading notes for you to complete and turn in. Make sure you are on the slide that says “Stepping Stone 1”. In the activities you will see the article under Activity 1 and the notes under Activity 2.

Tips: There are vocabulary words at the end of the article - look at these first to help with your reading. ALWAYS read the questions first (from the notes) BEFORE starting the reading - that way you know what you are looking for! You may work with a classmate, but everyone must turn in their own notes.

See you Monday!

Hi class! (It’s Ms. Salter).

Sorry we aren’t with you today. It’s time for you to make some notes based on what you have read so far, to prepare you to use your new knowledge in your create-a-state project.

Go to task dashboard and open the “Milestone 2 Assessment” under LC2.

Follow the directions in the task carefully about making a copy, sharing, and linking your copy in the task. DO NOT HIT SUBMIT - just hit “save” when you have done this.

For today - please complete slides 7-9. (You’ve already done the reading on slide 7). Think carefully about the state you are planning to create when you answer slide 9.

(We will go back to the earlier slides tomorrow).

If you have extra time, you can go back and answer slides 4 and 6 (the readings that you’ve already done are on slides 3 and 5).

See you with Mr. Solano tomorrow!

Good Morning!

I’m sorry I am not with you today.

Think of the yearbooks you looked at on Thursday. Now think of a section or page that you really want to see in our yearbook this year. What would it look like? Who would have the information you need to tell that story well? What kinds of pictures would help to tell that story?

Open Task Dashboard for this class. Complete today’s task - “Task 1: Yearbook Story.” Be sure to read the directions in the comment on the task.

A yearbook is a primary source document. It is a history of our school. What story would you and to be sure was included in that history?

1) The January 6 Activity was due yesterday. Please review your competency dashboards - if you need a rating for SS.1.1 and SS.1.5 this is your last opportunity to earn those skills. If you do not have ratings for those skills you will have to repeat this course in the spring semester.

2) Today we will begin the task that will earn both SS.4.1 and SS.4.2. Please open the “SS.4 Silent Spring and Environmental Activism” task and wait for me to begin.

Hello everyone!

I miss you all a ton. I’m so sorry - I won’t be back this week. I’m doing fine. I hope you are making good use of your time in our classroom - you can keep earning ratings even though I’m at home!!

Today and tomorrow you have 2 jobs:

1) You have a new packet to complete - it says “Foundation Basics” at the top. Remember - read the questions first and then go back to the reading to look for the answers. The highlighters are near the globe at the front of the room for you to borrow (make sure to return them). Make sure to put your name on your packet and leave it in the room for you to use again on Friday.

2) Check your dashboards and turn in some missing work - lets get those dashboards full!

Send me a message at salters@allentownsd.org if you have any questions.

**I have uploaded the packet to your Task Dashboards - it is Milestone 2 Stepping Stone 2. You won’t be able to complete the questions digitally, but if no one makes the packets for you on paper you can complete the reading and we will do the questions together on Tuesday***

I miss you all a ton. I’m so sorry - I won’t be back this week. I’m doing fine. I hope you are making good use of your time in our classroom - you can keep earning ratings even though I’m at home!!

Today and tomorrow you have 2 jobs:

1) Complete the January 6 activity and submit it. It’ll be worth SS1.1 and 1.5 for each of you.

2) Check your dashboards and turn in some missing work - lets get those dashboards full!

Send me a message at salters@allentownsd.org if you have any questions.

Hi everyone!

I am sorry I am not there with you today :-(

I’d like you to start the book today :-)

We have an audiobook to follow along with, but I can’t leave it for you - I have to log in to use it.

Today I want you to give it a try on your own. Everyone grab a book (if the box of books isn’t here send someone to Mr. Solano’s room to fetch them). Start on page 3. Keep reading for the entire class and stop if you get to page 43 (it goes FAST!) You may read alone or in pairs or small groups.

Make sure to put the books back for the next class :-)

For today, please read the chapter on Article I. (or begin to read it).

As you read, ask yourself - why did the Founding Fathers put this branch of government first? Are all 3 branches equal, or is any one more powerful than the others? WHy or why not?

Now that you have seen a dramatic depiction of some of the events of the Founding era, it is time to learn from the messages imparted by America’s first President upon his retirement.

Go to Task Dashboard and open “Washington’s Farewell Address.”

We will begin together as a class, then you will choose your writing assignment. It is due tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/9) by the end of class.

Happy Monday!

Today we are moving from Milestone 3 Stepping Stone 1 to Stepping Stone 2.

You have shown that you can describe how context influences one event - now you will compare events to each other and look for patterns (SS.1.5 - Continuity and Change Over Time).

We will begin together as a whole group for instruction, then you will collaborate with the people at your table on the practice exercises.

You should be prepared to move on to the individual assessment and turn it in tomorrow.

Please work quietly, and ask for help.

As promised - today we begin watching Hamilton!

Many of you still owe either the Federalist Papers (10 & 51) and/or Brutus. If you do, you should work on these quietly during the film.

We may or may not finish the entire movie - we’ll see how the week goes. :-)

Pay attention to the following themes:

-The causes of the American Revolution

-The treatment of immigrants and the function of wealth in Revolutionary America

  • The question of slavery

-The development of factions

-Questions about America’s role in other countries after Independence

  • Changes to the election of the President/Vice-President

-The impact of personal behavior/scandals on electability

-The role of women in society

Good morning and Happy Monday!

Tomorrow is ELECTIN DAY!! Those of you who are registered to vote - enjoy your first election! If you are not yet registered to vote, tag along with someone who is! Don’t forget the important ballot question about removing English as Allentown’s official language - more information about that HERE. Remember - the ballot will only say “Shall Paragraph B of Section 101 of the City of Allentown Home Rule Charter be removed from the Charter?” A vote of “yes” will remove the part of the Charter that makes English the official language of Allentown. A “no” vote means English remains the official language of Allentown city government.

Today we will continue our study of voter turnout with Milestone 3, by looking at historic elections and how events can impact whether people vote. At the end of Milestone 3 we will be examining voting behavior in Allentown.

Please open Milestone 3 Stepping Stone 1 (task dashboard) and wait for me to begin.

This week you will dive into the Federalist Papers and their counter-argument, Brutus.

By week’s end you will have read and analyzed Federalist 10 and 51, as well as the Brutus rebuttal.

These tasks are on task dashboard.

On Monday and Tuesday we will begin class with discussion of the two Federalist Papers. You have until Thursday to complete the assigned questions. You may work together, but each student must submit their own answers in their own words.

At the end of the week you will individually read “Brutus” and submit the answers before class on Monday.

Good Morning,

We cannot proceed with our discussions today because most students did not follow instructions yesterday. Almost no one signed up for the discussion topic, and only 4 students submitted their preparation notes.

After reviewing the ELA 6 Continua today you will complete and submit your preparation notes.

Those students who already completed all of their work will have a free period to do whatever they need to do for any class.

Reminder - there is NO MISSING ALLOWANCE in your portfolios. You must fill 100% of your SS and ELA portfolios to graduate.

Happy Tuesday!

Where is yesterday’s work???

It is very important that you put in a full day’s work, even when their is a sub.

As we discussed, the plans are always here on the Course page for you to follow.

Please see yesterday’s instructions and immediately get to work.

Every day we fall behind is another topic we may not get to cover before the AP Exam. When only 1-2 students are behind, I will keep moving ahead and you will be responsible for catching up on your own.

When almost the entire class does not complete their work, we cannot move ahead.

Some examples of “What strategies achieved the right to vote?” would be: going to court, passing a law, protests, Civil War.

You may leave the “Obstacles that still remain” column blank - we will come back to it together.

Happy Friday!

I hope you all became hooked on Bryan Stevenson’s story yesterday and are excited to meet the condemned man who is the focus of the rest of the novel! Please grab a copy of the book from the black crate and follow the directions below: (if the crate is missing, ask whoever is covering to call Mr. Buss and ask for the crate!)

  1. We reached the end of the 1st paragraph on page 13 yesterday. Please complete the Introduction today. (finish Page 18) If you were absent yesterday, please read as much of the Introduction chapter (Pages 3-18) as you can - try to finish.

  2. You may choose to read any of the following ways: Read silently to yourself (yes, you may use headphones to listen to music) - OR - Pick a partner or a group of only 3 people (no more) and read softly to each other - make sure other groups can do this and that the room doesn’t get too loud.

  3. Remember, the books MUST stay here in class. Return your book to the black crate before you leave.

  4. IMPORTANT FINAL DIRECTIONS - this is a test to see who is following directions carefully. Click the link at the bottom of this post to comment. Include the following information: My book number was ______ (numbers are written on the edges of the book). One thing I wonder about this book is_____________ (finish the sentence). I will be using your comments to confirm attendance. If 100% of the students in class leave the correct comment, I will bring a treat on Monday!

Have a wonderful weekend - see you Monday!!

Good Morning and Happy Friday!!!

  1. First of all thank you for going along with my last-minute idea yesterday! I don’t know how the final edited version came out - there was a LOT of unexpected wind noise that my phone picked up. Some of your other teachers are trying to help edit it out, but I don’t know how successful it’s going to be. I learned a lot for next time - in the future we will try something like this again, except with WAY MORE prep time and practice, and better audio equipment. Thank you again with running with the idea!

  2. Today your job is to get 100% of the class to turn in The Words We Live By questions. If you haven’t yet submitted it - work on it today and get it turned in before I see you on Monday morning. If you already turned it in, pick a partner, share your answers with each other, and help each other revise to make even stronger answers. You may choose to be generous and partner with a classmate who isn’t done in order to help every one get them in.

3 If 100% of you have submitted this assignment before I go to sleep on Sunday night, I will bring donuts to go with our discussion on Monday :-)

Have a happy Friday and a GREAT WEEKEND!

Good Morning and Happy Friday!

  1. Today you will be completing a review of your Social Studies and ELA dashboards. This will help both you and me know what you need to earn full credit and get/stay on track to graduate!

  2. You will find today’s work in Task Dashboard. It is called “Y4 Starting Dashboard Review.”

  3. Don’t forget to SHARE your work with staff@b21.allentownsd.org !!!

  4. Help each pother out if you get stuck. You can even wipe down your device and pass it to a classmate if they need one (wipes are on my desk).

Look back at yesterday’s blog post. If you owe me a “SS.2.1 Social Contract Reflection” use the rest of class today to complete it. Again - help each other! If you submitted it on paper I will be changing those Ms to ratings this weekend.. If you do NOT have an M for this task it means I received your work - grades will update this weekend.

Have a great Friday and a GREAT WEEKEND

Happy Monday!

Your goal today is to continue in Milestone 5, and to have a draft of an introduction ready for peer review by the end of class.

There will be several breakout rooms available to you today. If you are working independently on drafting your introduction and you do not need assistance, stay in the main room (in-person students do NOT need to log on to Zoom today).

If you need help, log in to the Zoom meeting and go to the “I need Help” room.

If you need a peer editor ( a student to exchange your introduction with and get feedback), please enter the “I need an editor” room.

We continue our work on Milestone 5 today. Today is a day to work independently.

Yesterday your goal was to at have a claim by the end of the day - That’s slide 38.

MANY STUDENTS DID NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON SLIDE 3. BEFORE CONTINUING TODAY YOU MUST ATTACH YOUR SLIDES TO THE TASK AND SAVE THE TASK (do not submit it!) SO THAT I CAN REVIEW YOUR PROGRESS.

Your goal today is to at least pull together the details that you need to begin drafting your introduction (Slide 46)

If you have written the first draft of your introduction (Slide 49) and need help finding a partner for peer editing, please let me know.

Today, before you complete your last review day, you MUST go onto your College Board Account and set up your testing app.

Use this link to get set up for tomorrow’s exam.

Mr. Woolf is sending around an announcement to excuse you from in-person attendance tomorrow - you all signed up to test from home.

Good Luck! And remember…this test is only one ruler used to measure your learning one time. It isn’t the ONLY ruler we use!

Here’s today’s plan.

On Monday we will be starting the research/.SS.2 phase of preparing to write our Argument Papers. If your Social Studies tasks are caught up this will be very easy. If you are behind in Social Studies your work will become much harder.

Today you will choose your breakout room based upon a task that you need. These are your choices:

1) SS.2.1 Back to School Opportunity 2) Milestone 4 Assessment 3) Milestone 3 Stepping Stone 3 4) Advanced Opportunity SS.4 (only available to you if all other tasks are complete)

There are also rooms for students who need help choosing a task, and a 1-on-1 conference room that I will be pulling students into.

Look at your Task Dashboard, choose a task, and enter the Zoom Meeting. Select “Breakout Rooms” at the bottom of your screen and move to the room assigned to the task you have selected.

Students in breakout rooms may help each other, or you may work independently. Call for help if you need me, but I will be working 1-on-1 with students so you need to do your best to work independently. All of these tasks have been introduced and explained during class (which is why you NEED to attend). Ask a classmate for help before calling for me.

What Does Graduation Mean to You?

Seniors - we are down to 3 weeks of classes to complete your portfolios in Integrated Social Studies 4 (US Gov) and ELA 4.

Some of you have completed enough work to guarantee credit - but your final grades are still to be decided.

Some of you have not completed enough work in one or both of these classes - which means you will not walk at graduation and you will need to come to summer school to continue working on your tasks.

IT’S TIME TO DIG IN!

There are three things you can do to help yourself:
1) Come to class EVERY DAY - not just the days you are in person!
2) Work while you are in class! Turn something in EVERY DAY 3) Do not blow off Wednesdays!!! You are expected to use your time on Wednesday to complete tasks and to come to office hours. DO NOT IGNORE BEING ASSIGNED TO OFFICE HOURS. The students who came to office hours this week filled 2 boxes in the SS Portfolio - what did YOU accomplish on Wednesday.

EVERY CLASS PERIOD CAN BRING YOU 43 MINUTES CLOSER TO GRADUATION IF YOU DON’T WASTE IT!

Happy Friday!

Today’s check-in is a Competency Dashboard Review

Using your Competency Dashboard, make a copy of the Review (linked above) and fill it in.

Then open this slide deck On one of the blue “Period 4” slides, pick a row and enter your name and one goal you have for next week (based upon your competency dashboard).

Then - return to your groups from yesterday and work for the rest of the class. Try to submit a completed task today!

Happy Friday!

In preparation for the exam on 5/20, this weekend is “Digital AP Exam Practice Weekend.” You should have received an email from the College Board about this.

This weekend they have set up generic practice questions so that you can practice using the testing app (answering questions, submitting answers, that sort of thing.)

It would be a very good idea for you to do this - it will make test day much less stressful.

Please follow the steps in the testing ap. There is an Exam Setup that you must complete 1-3 days before the exam as well - I will remind you of that when it is time.

Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to wish the moms in your loves a Happy Mother’s Day!

Good Morning!

Announcement for the Class: WEDNESDAYS ARE SCHOOL DAYS! You may not have your regular 10-period schedule, but you are expected to do schoolwork, go to advisory, and you are expected to come to office hours when you are assigned to them! Many of you were told on Tuesday that you were expected in office hours yesterday, but you did not show up. For many of you, Office Hours are the ONLY way you are going to complete enough tasks to get credit for this class and therefore graduate. For many of you, it is either Wednesday Office Hours or Summer School. Office Hours Assignments are posted every Tuesday on this page - do not make the same mistake next week!

Today’s Activities: Find your group below and follow the instructions:

Group 1: In Zoom with Me working on the Launch Milestone: Amia, Anthony C, Angel D, Miguel, Lemuel, Jose M, Eunice, Jaylee, Rachel, Elias, Angel S., Lineyri. Enter the Zoom Meeting (even if you are in the classroom) and open the Launch Milestone from your Task Dashboard.

Group 2: Continue Working on Milestone 3 Stepping Stones 1,2, and 3 (from Tuesday): Logan, Messiah, Ashanti, Anthony L, Javier, Maribel, Jessica. You do NOT need to be in Zoom if you are in the classroom - you are all working independently today.

Group 3: Keep up the good work! You will be in a breakout room together so that you can help each other on the SS.4 (Y4) Milestone. Taylor, Joanna, Haronid, Alex, Angeli

Happy Tuesday!

Thank you for your patience and your work yesterday!

Today please answer our check-in by entering a comment below. I would like to make room for a current events discussion day. There have been several important events in the news lately, and several interesting issues coming up in the US Senate - the conviction in George Floyd’s murder, DC Statehood, the For the People Act, the Green New Deal…so many possible topics. We haven’t been able to do this yet because attendance has been a bit rough over the past week (let’s work on that!). I would like to plan this discussion for Friday - and anyone who needs an ELA Discussion competency should see me because I can set that up for you.

  1. In the comments below, leave a topic or question you would want included in a current events day.

  2. Return to Edgenuity and continue working. Let me know if you need assistance. I will be updating Task Dashboard as you work.

  3. Mr. Woolf will be joining us today to help everyone set up and test their laptops for the AP Testing software. So please don’t stray too far from your laptops so that you’ll hear me calling for your attention to do this.

  4. HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Happy Friday!

As I mentioned yesterday, I am not here this afternoon :-(

If you haven’t seen today’s announcements, go to the home page in Slate and watch them. Have you been guessing the faculty/staff baby pictures?

Speaking of baby pictures, we’ve been asking for yours! So your job for advisory today is to go find a baby or elementary school photo of yourself and email it to me at salters@allentownsd.org

You can also text it to me - you all have the number.

Once you have done this you are done for the day. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!

(If you have ANY questions at all about Monday, your new schedules, or anything else that you need answered before Monday, text me or send me an email - I’ll get back to you over the weekend).

Happy Friday!

As I mentioned yesterday, I am not here today. :-(

Some announcements for Monday: If you are going to be in the building, please see me in the lobby on your way in to school. I am asking all of you to take “First Day of School” candids with your phones (or bring a camera if you have one). I will have Yearbook Staff ID lanyards for you to wear so that teachers will know you have permission to be using your phones to take pictures (please do not abuse this privilege!) I also nee 1-2 volunteers to stay after school for just 20-25 minutes - we will be taking a group photo of the teachers and I need someone to take the photo so I can be in it! Please email me if you can stay.

You each have one job today. I have already received adorable baby/elementary pictures from Soemie and Emilee - thank you!!!

As the staff of the yearbook we want to set the example for participation - so it’s time for everyone else to join in!

Please use this time, while you are still at home, to go find a baby or elementary school photo of yourself. Take a picture of it and place it in the Senior Baby Pictures folder in Google Drive (you must be signed in to your B21 Google Account to do this) You can send it to your school email, or upload it directly to your computers.

When the picture is in the Google Drive Folder, make sure to rename it with your first and last name (right click on your picture, select “Rename”. Don’t change the .jpg or other file extension at the end - just change the beginning of the file name (for example, IMG4321” to be your first and last name).

After you have done this you may use the rest of your time to work on a task from another class, or to complete another lesson in Edgenuity if you still haven’t finished that first Communications unit.

Go to 8th period at 1:30!

Have a great weekend!

Please review your task dashboard. Many of you have several tasks that are past due.

Please check that the following tasks have been completed, and use today to catch up on a missing task:

1) The Milestone 2 Assessment 2) The Launch Milestone 3) Milestone 1 - Discussion - did you turn in your preparation and reflection? Do you need to send me an email (salters@allentownsd.org) requesting a makeup discussion?

If all three of these things are done, you may use the rest of class to complete an assignment for another class.

Virtual Flex Day ("Snow Day")

Posted by Shannon Salter in Yearbook: 7 on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 12:37 pm

If ASD calls for a “Virtual Flex Day” because of bad weather, here’s what you need to do: (for December 16 or 17, 2020)

  1. This is NOT a “day off”! You are expected to complete work today!
  2. Make sure you completed your daily email attendance check-in, so you will be marked present today!
  3. Check LC2 Yearbook for unsubmitted tasks. If you haven’t completed any of the LC2 tasks, today is the day to turn those in!
  4. If LC1 Yearbook is still showing on your Task Dashboard, this means that you did not complete enough work in Edgenuity to earn your Wayfinding check in LC1. Log on to Edgenuity and complete assignments up to the end (Unit Test) of “Communications: Foundations of Communication,” We have not gone any further than that!
  5. Send me an email at salters@allentownsd.org if you need assistance!

Flexible Instruction Day (Snow Day) Instructions

Posted by Shannon Salter in Advisory: 10 on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 12:21 pm

If the school district announces a “Virtual Flex Day” because of inclement weather, here’s what you are expected to do:

  1. THIS IS NOT A DAY OFF!!!

  2. You must complete your attendance check-in via email - please be sure to do your daily email attendance so you will be marked present!

  3. Your classes will not have their regularly scheduled Zoom meetings. However, this does not mean no work!

  4. Use the day to work in Edgenuity or your Task Dashboard. Your teachers will be leaving instructions in your course pages on Slate (just like this page for our advisory). CHECK FOR INSTRUCTIONS!

  5. Some of you will be assigned to log on to zoom and meet with your teachers for assistance with past due assignments. Check your email and be sure to show up to these meetings!

  6. Contact your teachers with any questions that you have!

It is VERY important that you follow these instructions. We must use these “flex days” for learning, or else they will be counted as “snow days” and may need to be made up (we lose parts of spring break or we add days to the end of the year). Do your part and use this time to get on track in your classes!
